Bastien often appears annoyed or unhappy, and he's hardly ever moved to smile. He's devoted his life to his research - though, in truth, he doesn't take much enjoyment from it. He does, however, like making new, noteworthy discoveries. Bastien is vain nearly to a fault and appreciates having others praise his work. He has published several articles and two tomes regarding aetheric abnormalities and theories thereof, and he hopes to one day discover something that will set his work apart in the field forever.

Bastien can trace his ancestry back to Gelmorra on his father's side of the family, but both his parents were also born and raised in Old Sharlayan. Bastien grew up an only child and had an untroubled, if somewhat lonely, childhood. His father was a member of the Forum, and his parents were well-known for their accomplishments in their respective fields of study. They expected Bastien would apply himself to the pursuit of knowledge, and so he did. He resented his parents in his youth, but grudgingly went along with their wishes, not seeing any other viable option. He enjoys the comfortable lifestyle compliance afforded and excels at what he does, even if he has no passion for it. His parents, recently deceased, left Bastien a spacious house in Old Sharlayan, which he leaves mostly as it was back when they were living there.
